A gorgeous unique artwork depicting a scene from the Mahabharat.
Here we see Pandavas (called Pandewa in Bahasa Indonesia) receiving their purpose from Batara Guru(Shiva) and the other Hindu deities.
As narrated to me by the seller:
"Arjuna and his brothers are taking a test from Batara Guru as to acquire Pasupatasra. Batara Guru atop Nandi test the pandewa brothers before giving them the heavenly weapon. The ashura's came in form of beasts to attack them however Arjuna and Batara Guru manifested as avatar archers were able to destroy them and each claim they slaughter more foe then the others. In a heated debate, and secretly sow in discord by Shiva's disowned daughter the naga lady Pamavati. They decided to challenge each other into a fight of minds. Gratifying Batara Guru through a tough challenge, the high God bestows Arjuna as his equal and teaches him knowledge in various forms of arts. Along with Patupatasra as a gift. Batara Guru is shiva"
The amazing aesthetic is the work of Late Pak Tomik - a master artist who has left us a legacy of a phenomenal body of work.
The depiction of the clouds (mega mendung) is typical of the batiks of Cirebon in Java, Indonesia.
Note the detailed borders in this batik!
This fabulous work has been hand-drawn as a wall artwork. This is art for the sake of art into which the master has poured out his creativity and paid great attention to the details and to the balance of the visual.
A legendary work using chanting 0, the skill of Pak Tomik can't be matched by the hands of most modern pembatiks in Trusmi Batik village.

Made in the 1970s - 1990s
