***

Rare White field Selimut blanket textile from Ayotupas Timor.

The striking variation in the color of the left and right sets of bands makes this a remarkable piece.

Figures of Lizards have been skillfully woven in with multiple colors. The lizards depicted re the ones common in the Indonesian islands that have a flap between the head and the neck.

A further study of the numerous individual lizards reveals a variation in tails. The last few photos focus on these variations that are worth noting. [Of course it is entirely possible that these are artistic liberties and do not actually reflect variations in lizards :) ]

Superb textile overall.

Estimated to be from the mid 1900s

Someone back then had all the time in the world to devote themselves to the depiction of a spectrum of lizard tails ... so it is befitting that we spend a few moments noticing that labor and acknowledging it!
