922 Old Ethnic Jewelry - Pair of Conch Shell Bangles from Ladakh - SOLD

Pair of Conch Shell Bangles that are worn by women in Ladakh on both wrists.

Made from conch kernels, the opening is narrow on one end and broad on the other.

When greeting someone withrespect, for instance - a monk, women knock the two bangles together to create a pleasant jingle.

This is a part of the cultural costume of Ladakh.

This pair is estimated to be from the early 1960s

Has minor signs of wear from usage.

The inner diameter is 6cm as shown in the last picture

Literature: Heinrich Harrer in his monumental page turner "Ladakh" recounts meeting an old woman wearing this type.
