Antique Ikat Tube Skirt
A fabulous ikat tube skirt from Timor with figures.
The central band is adorned with pairs of four rows of human figures (total of 24). Separating them are vertical columns of ornamented diamonds.
Each figure is created in undyed white against the maroon background. Within the white lines, there are red and black dots an dashes. The perfect alignment and precision of these dots, even at such a micro scale, is of a level that we might expect from a felt-pen drawing. Ikats are rarely this perfectly done - even in the finest examples from Cambodia we see some fuzziness in execution.
Figurative ikats from Timor are more common in indigo - this one, created with maroon as a base is unusual.
This is a dazzling masterpiece on the basis of the amazing craftsmanship that has gone into it.
