2041 Vintage Silk Laotian Weaving Textile Art

$1,600.00

Gorgeous Vintage Ceremonial Silk Woven Textile from Laos

Rich light-maroon base with superfine silk weaving.

Striking palette on cloth that has softened with age.

Geometric motifs beautifully interwoven with mythological figures to create a dense pattern at both ends of the textile.

Important cultural motifs - Phii Nyak, Siho & Hong birds are present

The central field that has been left plain(about 45 cm) offers a striking contrast and gives the textile a strong presence.

The number of colors of supplementary silk thread used in the weaving composition directly impacts the complexity of the mechanics of weaving it - the more colors used the longer it takes to weave it. In this gorgeous textile 4 colors have been used all over the piece!

Will be perfect as a wall hanging or even as a shawl / wrap.

The supplementary threads are silk. The base cloth is silk. Silk fringes attached on both ends.

Superb piece that is one single piece of cloth and not sections stitched together.

1'4" x 7'10"  (41 x 239 cm)

Said to be a meditation cloth from Northern Laos

Estimated to be from the mid 1900s

MY NOTES:

The finesse of Laotian weavings is seen through aspects

1) the number of color used & the frequency of change of color

2) the size of the motifs as this demands some change at the time of weaving. A with a figure that is 20 cm long will demand a little less attention during weaving than 2 figures that are 10 cm each or 4 figures that are 5 cm each.

3) the degree of intermeshing of different motifs makes for a more complex drawing plan overall. For instance, a row of figures placed next to each other, is easier to weave than a figure intermeshed with a triangle that spills over from a different row.

So on the face of it, all Laotian textiles look similar until a closer examination reveals these nuances.
