2015 Antique Batik Textile Hipwrapper Ceylon
Large Antique Batik Textile
A superb large batik with striking end panels
Fantastic presence.
This Indian trade cloth, produced on the Coromandel Coast of southeast India, was exported to Sri Lanka. In Ceylon, such a cloth served as a somana tuppottiya—a sarong or wrapped garment worn by wealthy men. Collected in Sri Lanka (Ceylon).
These cloths were worn in the Southeast Asian style, wrapped around the waist so the tumpal-like end border patterns were displayed at the front. Many later found their way into temple treasuries or became cherished heirlooms among aristocratic families.
Estimated to be from the early 1900s.
Collected in Sri Lanka (Ceylon).
Has holes and stains and has been mounted on a backing cloth to prevent further attrition.
Can be folded and framed or repurposed.
The large size and the striking colors make this a superb choice for decorating.
356cm x 107 cm (over 3 meters long!)
