2003 Antique Palampore Kalamkari - Ceylon
Antique Palampore Kalamkari
A kalamkari / chintz / palampore in dark saturated colors made on a fine cloth for the Ceylon market
Featuring large floral patterns. Borders have a European influence with ribbons and bows.
Appears to be wholly hand painted and drawn (though I'm not 100% sure)
Fantastic dark natural dyes are still vivid and striking
Has damage.
Originally used on a bed. Also used as a wall-hanging.
138 x 205cm
Estimated to be from the mid 1800s
See the last image - a photo of a Palampore in use in a wall mural in an old Buddhist temple in Sri lanka
Note that the palampore has no backing cloth. Some photos have been staged with a maroon background cloth. Others have a white backing cloth. The images of the textile on the wall have been created digitally for visualisation purposes and are not to size.

Signs of this life lived heartily may be present on the piece in the form of stains, thread loss, loose threads, holes, tears, color run and other imperfections.
