Rare Fragments of Antique Palindon - Astrological Calendar Painting

RARE FINE COTTON BASE THAT HAS NO LAYER OF LACQUER OR ORGANIC LAMINATION [such as those seen on the later ones]

Pigment on European cotton cloth.

Palindon are 12-month calendars depicting the 12 months and the deity associated with that month. The painted scenes for each month illustrate the written predictions.

The style is characteristic of the Kamasan artists in the late 1800s and early 1900s in Balinese villages like Ubud.

This example is clearly older than most others available and is estimated to be from the mid-1800s.

148 x 47 cm

Heavy wear. Many figures have been rubbed out. But the ones that remain are stunning.

EXAMPLES : TROPENMUSEUM, BALI MUSEUM and similar style is seen in the Heritage Building Kerta Gosa in Bali
