Batik Art from Cirebon Indonesia

Cirebon is home to a cultural confluence both Sundanese and Javanese cultures into which colors of the foreign cultures have been added in due to centuries of trading at its ports.

While linguistically they have adopted the Javanese language there is a heavy Sundanese influence. While the people have embraced Islamic theology, the influence of Hindu and Buddhist legends remains entrenched in their folk tales.

Upon sighting the first Cirebonese Batik, I could clearly make out a character from the Ramayan and was surprised. One thing led to another and now the collection consists of 18 Cirebonese Batiks that narrate stories from the Mahabharat and the Ramayan - both Hindu epics.
