Antique Ikat Textiles

Fabulous Craft - Fantastic Art of Ikat

Ikat as a craft is a wonder to me... because of the tedious crafting effort needed to create the art.

The design is planned and the sections that need different colors are marked out mentally. The threads are then aligned in the place they will eventually be woven in, and tied to cover up the selective sections where a particular dye is not needed and then the rest is dyed. Then this is repeated for the other dyes. And after the threads are dyed and ready, the threads are woven. As a result of some inevitable slip movement, the visual is usually a bit diffused.

So ikats with precision, ikats with tiny motifs and ikats with multiple colors require greater effort and attention.

Come enjoy fine ikats from Asia in the Wovensouls gallery of antique Ikats.
