Very rarely seen Dhakai Kashida Silk embroidery Square Textile

Monochrome floral & boteh motifs.

In the 19th century Muga kashida was produced commercially in Dhaka for export to Basra and Jeddah. Pilgrims would take them to the Haj and Arabs used them as turban cloths or in costume. This piece was acquired in Aceh, Sumatra.

Probably Muga Silk embroidery.

[I say 'probably'only because a microscopic examination is required to confirm this ... and until I can do that myself I do not wish to mislead]

[Muga is a highly prized naturally colored golden silk thread that is available mainly in Assam, Bihar and around and is one of the few yarns that gets more lustrous upon usage]

Size: 55'' x 54'' (140 x 137 cm)

Two panels have been stitched together to create this width.

Has holes and edge wear - will do well with a backing cloth.

Estimated to be from the late 1800s from Dhaka in undivided India, now in Bangladesh
