1408 Antique Puri Patta Jagannath Juggernaut Painting Indian Art

Antique Puri Patta Jagannath Juggernaut Painting w Blue - Indian Art

Amazing extra large & unparalled example of "Puri Patta" Jagannath Puri Paintings!

This large example of a painting depicting the temple of Lord Jagannath Puri is a pilgrim's souvenir to be brought back upon visiting this important temple in the East of India. Painted using natural colors, this vivid palette is characteristic of the paintings of Odisha, a state that offers several forms of exquisite art.

Until the early 1900s, travel for pilgims entailed extreme hardship and took months to complete. The circuit included Kashi Vishwanath temple in Banaras and Jagannath Puri temple - sometimes only one or the other.

And souvenirs such as a shaligram from banaras or a jatripatti painting from Puri were brought back.

This painting is estimated to be from the 19th century or earlier.
