332 SOLD Exquisite Old Silver Kajal Kohl Maker

Sold to a discerning Antique Art-Lover

***

Kajal or Kohl is applied in the eyes of men, women and children.

In the olden days this was made at home by burning castor oil and collecting the deposit from the smoke on some metal - the bottom of a bowl or large spoon.

Since silver has purifying properties, silver was preferred, especially for kajal made for babies.

This is one such kajal maker - one that is highly decorated and ornamented, suggesting that it was used by a wealthy family.

Kajal makers were rare even in those days as any metal could be used as a substitute - but one that is as ornate and fine is almost impossible to find.

Age unknown but estimated to be 50-60 years old

India

I doubt I shall ever see another one like this!
