1673 Antique Sainchi Phulkari

Rare Antique Sainchi Phulkari Silk Embroidery Textile Art

Another spectacular Sainchi featuring the scenes from rural life in Punjab.

The use of stripes in the motifs is unusual and creates a vibrant contrasting aesthetic.

We see large animals in the pallo ends, birds with fancy tails alongside goats or camels. And finally we see a boundary created by smaller birds.

We then see several humans in various activities including one with a ball.

The most interesting of these is the one of the man wearing a tropical colonial helmet (that was popular amongst Europeans in the colonial days) seated on a chair with another man prostrating before him. The context in not known but it does indicate a hierarchical display of respect by someone  deemed inferior to another deemed superior.

We also see the board game of Chopat and some flowers.

also noteworthy is the use of a little green and a little purple in the embroidery.

Condition is generally good but these is some thread loss.

Given the age of the textile artwork, deficiencies in the form of thread loss, stains, repairs etc are inevitable.

Age unknown but it estimated to be 80-90 years old

Punjab, Undivided India.

Please see the video uploaded after all the photos.
