Hand Painted Prayer Flag Banner from Tibetan interiors
All natural mineral and vegetable pigments on cloth.
In Tibet and most of Buddhist Himalayas, prayer flags are common and are hung up at all elevated points.
This set of prayer flags is a rare hand-painted banner that was once offered to a Tibetan monastery. Eventually older ones are consecrated and replaced.
26 simple naive-art images of various Buddha forms & deities painted on 9 canvas panels.
Each panel is sewn by hand onto a leather strip. Loops are present along the entire length for secure hanging without sagging.
Estimated to be from the 1800s
Length of Banner: 85 inches.
Each panel: approximately 8.5 x 5 inches.
Very rare item that was completely handmade and intended for self consumption rather than for a commercial purpose.
Compared to the elaborate artworks seen otherwise, this authentic rustic artwork is extremely refreshing as it reminds us of the hardy real people of the olden days of Tibet.
CONDITION NOTE: Generally yellowed cloth, frayed edges, stains, some paint rubbed off, some stitches have come off. All panels are complete but have folds.
