1481 SOLD Vintage Lao Tai Weaving Textile Art w Tiger Motif

Sold to a discerning Antique Art-Lover

***

Lao-Tai Textile Cloth Khiao Ser (Tiger) pair used by local priests during healing ceremonies to invoke powerful and protective spiritual forces.

Rare and very interesting motif of a Tiger protecting a smaller cub.

The protective spirit combined with the fierce expression on the face of the larger tiger makes this a very powerful textile.

In the cultural context textiles and motifs are not merely aesthetic designs but containers of aura and ethos and used in ceremonies to reflect the sentiment.

Note the exceptional filler elements across the field

The main field is woven in two colors in a way such that it could be viewed equally well from both sides.

Note also the colored selvedges.

Cotton Cloth hand-loomed weaving

Estimated to be from the early-mid 1900s.

From the Tai peoples in the area in the border between Vietnam and Laos

A similar example was exhibited at the “Fowler in Focus: Spirits in the Loom: Lao-Tai Textiles” at UCLA California.

Size: 25'' x 51.5'' (64 x 131 cm)
