Composite Pashmina Prayer Mat

The field shaped as a mihrab, is made of a blue kani weaving with bent-tip boteh

The outer section is made of striped pashmina with an extensive variety of flowers, each multicolored. There are at least 13 flower varieties if we do not count the color-variation versions separately.

The style of depicting flowers realistically in a manner in which they can be easily identified is probably a result of the Mughal ruler Jehangir's liking for flowers that also resulted in Ustad Mansur's series of botanical paintings.

Both sections estimated to be from the late 1700s / early 1800s.

Provenance: Christie's (London)

125x 78cm

Made of smaller pieces stitched together. Has minor damage and repairs.

This item has spent a lifetime being used for the purpose of its creation with the original artist/user.
