A gorgeous Batik Sarong / Textile with deep dark colors
Batik Pattern created entirely by hand (Tulis)
The main colors are deep maroon, deep bottle green and deep blue - all looking deeply saturated
The motif is several flower bouquets set against the diamond lattice.
There is one remarkable features of this Sarong that one of the long edges has a blue border w hile the other long edge has a green border.
So it could be worn in two different orientations.
But then what about the bouquets? Would those not appear upside-down?
To accommodate the possibility of the 180 degree turn, on the left half of the textile, the bouquet stalks point to the blue border and on the right half the bouquets point in the opposite direction.
Therefore the sarong would be matched with either a blue or a green blouse and then the wrapping of the sarong would be oriented accordingly to show off the desired border and allow the correctly oriented bouquets to be seen and the ones oriented wrong would be hidden in the folds.
How much thinking has gone into this!
And the injustice of it all is that only after 10 years of having this piece, I have noticed this feature. Am glad I did otherwise the artist would have been cheated.
