Raw Silk Pha Biang Silk Cloth hand-loomed in Laos

Exquisitely developed figures of human forms, animals & birds present in this stunning weaving

The primary motif is that of the “phii nyak,” or “giant spirit" - a vicious spirit that protects the innocent and is often found on children’s blankets. Below the phii nyak are “siho,” mythical elephant-lions that are emblematic of male energy, and below that are “hong birds,” with elephant trunks (echoing the siho) which represent good luck.*

High density of motifs all over the textile - as a result the ground is minimally visible.

Mounted on cloth

Estimated to be from the late 1800s - early 1900s

65 x 129 cm

*Thanks to Joshua Hirschstein for sending in the detailed note explaining the motifs
