1795 Antique Pua Pilih Dayak Textile

Antique Figurative Pua Pilih Cloth Dayak Textile with Humans, animals and birds figures

The pattern all over the textile is a typical aesthetic of the region seen across media - in paintings on walls, in wood baby carriers, and in bone carvings. The only difference is that the curvilinear lines seen in other media are angularised in cloth, because of the limitations of weaving warp & weft at right angles.

Made in three panels

The largest panel, covering two thirds of the cloth, presumably represents spirits lifting up a Dayak symbol. A smaller panel pictures male/female figures. A third, small panel depicts livestock. Geometric patterns decorate the small panels at top and bottom.

Note that the front and the back are both fabulous artworks

Fantastic soul-filled genius in this textile
