Antique Yao Ceremonial Paintings / Set of 10

Saturated colors. Rich mineral pigments. 

Pre 1900, Vietnam - and most probably Yao

Used in ceremonies and therefore subjected to wear through regular handling. 

Note the construction of the handmade paper. Note the inscription on the back. 

Sizes vary and the heights range from 25cm to 35cm. (see last photo for comparative size)

Most paintings in the category are found in the form of large scrolls that are over 100 cm long. This is an unusual size,that I have seen for the first time in the past decade of collecting. 

The set would work perfectly on the walls of homes, either scattered or all together. 

Such old pieces are rarely available as most have been destroyed through usage.

There is noticeable loss to pigments,heavy edge wear and minor tears. 

 UPDATE: Upon closer examination, each of these has been painted on handmade cardboard sleeves or pockets created by attaching several layers of handmade paper together. In one, remnants of incense sticks were found. Another has a hole burnt in - probably by a live incense stick. So these appear to be packets that held incense sticks during ceremonies & rituals. Will look in my library to see if published details of such usage can be found.

This item has spent a lifetime being used for the purpose of its creation with the original artist/user. Signs of this life lived heartily may be present on the piece in the form of stains, thread loss, loose threads, holes, tears, color run and other imperfections. Therefore the condition must be assumed to be “not” perfect. More photos of such imperfections will be provided on request.
