1853 SOLD Antique Sainchi Phulkari

Rare Antique Sainchi Phulkari Silk Embroidery Textile Art

Another spectacular Sainchi featuring the scenes from rural life in Punjab.

The use of stripes in the motifs is unusual and creates a vibrant contrasting aesthetic. All figures have at least two colors - some have five!

We see large animals in the pallo ends, birds with fancy tails alongside goats or camels. And finally we see a boundary created by geometric motifs

We then see several humans in various activities - Some strife, some serenading, some colonial Englishmen, some local sports. We see a potter carrying his wares for sale and a woman making lassi in a pot using the traditional rope & rod blender. We see a man beating a woman and another trying to save her or maybe it is a  pair of Mother-in-Law + Husband assualting the bride - a common event in the olden days. We see women at a spinning wheel - spinning yarn. And a train - a newly introduced object that was a novelty in those days. Birds and animals are seen all over as filler elements.

With scenes ofwife-beating &women spinning yarn, these textiles are like photographs offering a glimpse into the lives of the women in that era.

Condition is generally good. There is a difference in the palette between the two corners of the large textile.

Age unknown but it estimated to be 80-90 years old

Punjab, Undivided India.

Please see the video uploaded after all the photos.
