Old Ship Cloth from Indonesia
In the straits of Singapore and the surrounding region, the ship is a symbol of safe transit across stormy waters and features often in cultural traditions.Years ago, when we were sent on a foreign posting from Singapore, we were given a little wooden hand-crafted ship by a close Singaporean friend as a token of his best wishes for the new adventure.
The ship motif features in many textiles from the region that are used in ceremonies during important transitions of life.

This item has spent a lifetime being used for the purpose of its creation with the original artist/user. Signs of this life lived heartily may be present on the piece in the form of stains, thread loss, loose threads, holes, tears, color run and other imperfections.
