Rare Antique Phulkari with Bird motif
Beautifully done Bird Phulkari embroidery
Note the reversal of direction in the peacocks halfway across the textile!
Also note the presence of a larger and a smaller bird - either mother and child or male-female.
Though these have been called peacock phulkaris traditionally, it is likely that the birds depicted are pigeons. This suggestion arises from the fact that Punjab has a highly evolved competitive sport called 'kabutar baazi' that employs live pigeons in a game of power and control.
Note the variation in color between mother and child. And the planned color variation across the matrix.
