5512 SOLD Group of 3 Sling Bags made of Vintage Textile fragments

Three slingbags made using an embroidery patch from Gujarat, India.

The base cloth is handspun khadi cotton dyed in natural red dye. The embroidery stiches are amazingly perfect.

Textile art was a major hobby and artworks were created as household items. Embroidered bags to pack the bride's trousseau, skirts, household curtains to cover the trunks and many other forms of textiles were made by every housewife.

This piece is a fragment from one such utilitarian textile and has now been converted into a sling bag by some clever person to extend the life of the artwork.

The bottom has been reinforced with cloth bands made of some polyester based fabric - that was sold at a premium in the 1960s. So from the maker's point of viewpoint of that era, she was 'adding' value and making the piece more beautiful with the polyester bands.

One weathered Rabari dowry bag. One bag made of a sari fragment

Condition is not perfect.

All handmade.
