1858 Antique Masaulipatnam Palampore Print

Exquisite Antique Palampore Masterpiece Print

A gorgeous floral chintz / palampore.

Featuring a variety of flowers in reds, blues and a beautiful purple

Quilted with hand-done stitches

The dyes are lovely and the cloth has yellowed elegantly with age.

Has a backing and a thin layer of cotton wool.

Note the purples and the yellow.

Note the extremely fine patterns within the flowers.

Size of the textile: 84 x 183 cm

Estimated to be from the early 1800s

This is  likely from Masaulipatinam meant for the Persian market.

Acquired from an old American collection

Pieces of such fine craftsmanship are rarely available.

Has some losses / damage at one end (several splits in the lower panel of the cloth)  but this is well-contained by the quilting stitches. Please ask for more photos if needed.

NOTE:

In printing or dyeing, the term registration is the alignment of all the various inks that are being used one by one.

In poorly done works, the colors are outside the boundary lines and there is overlap that results from poor placement.

But in this fabulous artwork - there are few such flaws and registration is perfect.

Also, note that there are many pieces made about a century later. DO zoom in and study the textiles very closely and the differences between this piece from the 1800s and the later ones will reveal themselves clearly.
