1314 - Antique Tibetan Thangka

Antique Tibetan Thangka with Avalokiteshvara

Antique Thangka originally from a Tibetan monastery and joined a Western collection in the '80s.

Avalokitesvara seated in the lotus position in the center, sumptuously adorned with jewels with the Amitabha Buddha featured on top of the crown, surrounded by additional deities.

Ink and pigment on cloth

32.75''''h x 23''''w, overall: 50''''h x 27.75"w

As can be seen in the last few photos, the base cloth of the painting has some waxy burnished finish. The borders are made of hand spun hand woven cotton.

Overall even browning with age and the appearance matches that of thangkas seen in situ in the some of the oldest monasteries in the Himalayas.

Condition is worn. Paint has a crackled appearance. Has the scent of incense (at the time of writing this).

Estimated to be from the early 1800s (if not earlier).

Pieces of this age are hard to come by and are cherished for their age as much as they for their art.
