The valleys of Swat / Hazara and neighboring areas have faced incessant turmoil.
Yet, or perhaps because of that turmoil, the human spirit looks inward and finds ways to create beauty within – and express that beauty in the outside world as art.
Maybe as they work on artworks of silk floss, they sing songs together, dreaming dreams for their future, for themselves and their children. Just like me.
Maybe as they lay down to rest, the soft silken threads that trace the patterns of their mighty ancestors on the pillow covers, act as bridges that carry their dreams across to fairy tale land. Just like the rest of us.
Maybe their dreams are different from mine.
But I have no doubt that the feel of the same silken artworks against my face*, would work just as well to take me over to my fairytale land.
A few examples of these
More images of these and other Hazara / Swat textiles ma be seen on wovensouls.com linked here.
*against my face* – not something I would subject such timeless artworks to ….for they are precious and must be preserved forever.
