Myanmar is known by its fantastic architecture seen in the Golden Pagodas in the various cities.

But equally beautiful are the serene landscapes of rural Myanmar.

The simple life, the low level of economic activity may be the effect of or the cause of the spiritual life the rural people lead. But more about the ideology of the people later.

Here I present a few pictures taken from a moving bus that capture the spirit of rural Myanmar.

The open air “beer stations” as they are called in the local language and the tea-houses that are very significant social institutions for casual gatherings.

In homes such as these, there is no electricity yet and the waking hours are set by the sun. Generators are sometimes use to run basic electrical toys like the TV.

Several generations of families live together as ‘joint’ families.
