An Interesting Anecdote….. Dowry

October 15, 2021 1 min read

In a recent conversation with one of my rural friends, we were speaking about a tribe that lives mainly in the desert of Rajasthan.

He told me of the unique dowry items that were given to the girl at the time of her wedding: a dog and a donkey.

The dogs kept by that tribe are good at hunting and sure to bring back something to their mistress on command. So whether her husband provides for her sufficiently or not, the dog can be depended on for food. So he is a treasured dowry item.

And the herder lifestyle of this tribe means that most of their possessions travel with them from place to place … and so a donkey is useful in carrying the load.

Practical. Effective. Efficient.

Who needs gold as dowry?!
