Note on Red Phulkaris / Use in Wedding Consummation Rituals

Immersive exposure and study of the 29 white-base phulkaris led to certain observations.

Supplemented by readings of published material (Cooney (2019), Hershman (1981) and Ibbetson (1939)) led to the formation of a hypothesis.

To determine the plausibility of this hypothesis, fieldwork was conducted in 8 towns in Punjab with senior ladies.

The findings of this exploratory study – termed “breakthrough” by a collector-client who is a well-traveled public figure – have been presented with love and respect for the people and traditions of Punjab of that era.
