Curatorial Advisory Offered
Over 40 years of collecting textiles actively, my eyes and my aesthetic preferences have evolved.
Each acquisition has been the result of roughly 80-100 hours of investment across the curatorial stages below:
* Vigilant Hunting: Every free hour is spent looking for treasures online and in catalogs. In the rare categories it takes months or even years of waiting & watching before a treasure is found. A disciplined system of vigilance has been crucial to staying aware of the latest offerings and building the collection.
* Filtering. Hundreds of pieces were viewed and rejected, before a piece was selected. The line between selection and rejection was tricky. In-depth observations and a good system of noting where comparative examples were seen, helped to be on the right side of that line
* Field research in dozens of cultures helped to understand the context of traditions and rituals that gave birth to the artwork. Sitting with the people at the origin and listening to their anecdotes and stories of usage, symbolism and history firsthand, enhanced my understanding of the artwork.
* Visual Studies of dozens of physical pieces through dealer visits and museum visits across the globe, trained my eyes to discern between the good, the better and the best.
* Readings of books, articles, catalogs and anything published anywhere, was a great shortcut to learn through the explorations of other art-lovers & scholars.
* Discussions with category experts to learn from them
My artworks are all very special to me. Each one is beloved and each one has a curatorial rationale.
