Chhatarpur in Bundelkhand was founded about 1785 by a Ponwar Rajput.
In 1806 the state accepted a mandate (sanad) from the British and acquiesced to East India Company protection.
Sixteen years later in 1822 Chhatarpur came under direct British control.
