Antique Swat Valley Textile with a motif that is undeniably the Elibelinde motif [see last image of Elibelinde from wikipedia]
Amazing example that speaks of migration of cultural memes
Old handwoven cotton
Panels hand stitched together.
Used as wedding shawls and worn on ceremonial occasions within the women's quarters.
Motifs rendered in silk floss.
Extraordinary stylisation of motifs.
Stained and discolored. This has been factored into the price of this otherwise superb piece.
Swat Valley textiles are rare and every piece is a delight to study!
The motifs in this one are older designs not seen in later pieces from the 1900s
Estimated to be from the late 1800s if not earlier. It is the oldest Swat Valley piece I have seen.
This item has spent a lifetime being used for the purpose of its creation with the original artist/user.Signs of this life lived heartily may be present on the piece in the form of stains, thread loss, loose threads, holes, tears, color run and other imperfections. Therefore the condition must be assumed to be “not” perfect. More photos of such imperfections will be provided on request.
