1644 Antique Woven Pua Sungkit Iban Textile

Beautiful Rich Antique Woven Pua Sungkit Iban Textile from Borneo

This type of weaving is now extinct making this category a highly coveted one.

Such textiles played an important role in headhunting ceremonies and hence were among the most tediously decorated woven works.

Motif appears to be that of a head - as there is a semblance of eyes & mouth.

Note the use of green and blue at both ends.

Has a repair patch.

Lovely color that has faded unevenly.

153 x 60cm approximately

Provenance Anita E. Spertus and Robert J. Holmgren, authors of "Early Indonesian Textiles from Three Island Cultures"
