Have you ever had something you liked but didn’t quite notice fully.
And then one day, some details that you were blind earlier suddenly enter your consciousness and take your breath away?
This happens to me quite often.
Why this happens I have no idea but it is certainly beneficial.
Long after a piece has joined my collection after a while the thrill of the acquisition wanes and slowly, with the passage of time and occurrence of other events, the piece gets pushed to the back of the mind. Other exciting pieces come along entice one’s attention and the previous piece becomes one of the many in the store.
But suddenly some circumstance prevails and the piece comes out of the store. And the eyes and the soul delight in its beauty one more time. It is time to fall in love with the same piece for the second time. This, I see as a fortunate revival as I can spend many more hours delighting in it without the pains of pursuit & purchase.
So here is a piece that took my breath away for the second time.
The peacock blue silk. Blue?? I thought to myself – in all of my time spent with this category of textiles I did not remember coming across any blue silk. How pretty the blue was!
The surprise did not end there.
There was also an inscription in Gurmukhi.
The only phulkari that I have seen with blue. The only phulkari that I have seen that has a date inscribed onto it. 1887.
And to think that I had allowed this piece to slip away from my attention!
Some pictures of this unique bagh:
It is such a pleasure to receive unexpected dividends of pleasure from an earlier investment!

[p.s. Am sure there are many more out there with inscriptions and with blue … this is just my ‘beginner’s experience that I am narrating here. Please share your knowledge and pictures if you have any with inscriptions etc. Thanks!]

Steve Wallace has kindly sent in pictures of two outstanding phulkaris – one with an inscription and the other with blue – for our viewing pleasure!!
Thank you Steve.
I have passed it on to friends to have the text read. We should have some answers soon. In the meanwhile enjoy the eye candy!
Soooo enchanting!
