1287 Rare Antique Tibetan Buddhist Silver Ghau with Bone Inlay

Large Silver hand crafted Ghau box from Tibet

Meant to be worn on the waist belt as a spiritual ornament

Inlaid with superbly carved Buddha made from bone

Has a copper back.

Contains a few grains of dried leaves (possibly juniper) considered to be auspicious

While silver ghaus are not too uncommon, ones with such organic inlay work - probably bone - are rare.

Estimated to be from the early 1900s

13 X 14 X 4cm

History of this piece: Tibetan pilgirms offer these prayer wheels at monasteries as a token of worship. These offerings are then auctioned sometimes. This and the other prayer wheel 1288 and a few other items were acquired in such an auction.
