172 Rare Hilltribe Tunic with Jobs Tear Seed Embroidery

Tunic with Embroidery with Job's Tear Seeds all over the front and back.

Karen Hilltribe

Northern Thailand

In rural social systems the complete textile gets worked on constantly - so the feature of different elements from different eras is quite common.

Rare to find one in such good condition. Most others have the seeds falling off as the thread used to fasten them to the cloth has deteriorated over the decades and broken.

In the case of this piece, it is likely that much much older piece was salvaged and made into this tunic a few decades ago.

The oxidised patina of the seeds indicates that the seeds are from the 1800s and may have been reattached.

The synthetic red ribbons & some red embroidery threads are later attachments and estimated to be from the 1960s.

The large Job's tear seeds have yellowed with age and have great patina!

Has signs of wear & usage that are a testimony to the textile artwork's hearty life.
