1349 SOLD - Spectacular Old Banarasi Sari with Silver in Zari

Sold to a discerning Antique Art-Lover

***

Antique Silk sari from Banaras meant for a bride's trousseau acquired from a Parsi family

The Zari has some precious metal content.

The complete sari is woven as a Zari or metal thread brocade

It is an ancestral heirloom piece

This weight of the sari is about 800 grams and it is estimated that the silver content is about 80%.

This piece was acquired from my jeweler and was sold to him by a well-to-do Parsi family.

The general condition is good with two known spots of minor tears. But silk of this age and finesse is very fragile and so this sari cannot be worn in the current condition without risk of further damage.

There are two fold lines and one patch about 12 inches x 15 inches in which the zari silver has been oxidised due to exposure to the atmosphere. (last photo). This is a common problem with zari that contains real silver.

Great for framing and for wall display.

Stunning Peacocks and florals all over with not even a square inch that does not contain the zari!!

Such blanket work is a rare feature.

Age unknown but estimated to be at least 70-80 years old

114 X 508

This item has spent a lifetime being used for the purpose of its creation with the original artist/user. Signs of this life lived heartily may be present on the piece in the form of stains, thread loss, loose threads, holes, tears, color run and other imperfections. Therefore the condition must be assumed to be “not” perfect. More photos of such imperfections will be provided on request.
