Large Puri Patta Pilgrim's Souvenir painting from Odisha

This fine example of folk painting of the temple of Lord Jagannath of Puri, also known as Puri Patta or Jatripatri has been painted on cloth using natural colors. The vivid colors are characteristic of the historical folk art of the region. The cotton cloth is treated before painting with glue and and after painting with lacquer to protect the paint. Jatripattis were done by reed pens and had bold lines. Jatripattis religious souvenirs of the kind that were given to the pilgrims who visited Jagannatha temple in Puri until the start of the century (1900s). The old methods of painting have now been discontinued. This piece is estimated to be from the late 19th century or earlier. Hindus have four important pilgrimage spots -known as 'Chaar Dhaam' that a devout Hindu ought to visit during his lifetime. The Jagannath temple of Puri is one of them.
